Beelining – Tracking Wild Honeybees
August 20 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm PDT
$20.00 – $35.00
Have you ever wondered how to follow honeybees in the wild? Join the growing community of wild honey bee trackers and learn the ancient art of beelining. Beelining is the craft and science of locating wild honeybees. The practice is as old as humankind and has gained new relevance in a time of the accelerating mortality of managed honeybees. Wild (unmanaged) honeybees on the other hand have evolved as self-sustaining populations and are an essential focus for conservation and research.
We will explore the rich history, essential tools, techniques, and strategic approaches involved in beelining, along with methods for monitoring wild honeybee populations. Through regular observations of wild nests, we can witness their life cycles and resilience, contributing invaluable data to bolster their protection and conservation. Embark on a journey into the captivating realm of wild honeybees with us. An exhilarating activity that leads us to new insights of hidden nests within our own watersheds. What we will learn:
- How to set up your own beelining adventure
- Necessary tools, resources and guidelines
- Monitoring protocols and sheets
- Tracking modalities for diverse landscapes
- Citizen science: become part of a global movement and how to use Apis Arborea’s new WildBeeWatch app
This is the fifth of 6 sessions that can be booked individually or as part of a series. The live-streamed event fosters interactive learning and vibrant discourse, welcoming participants of all experience levels. Led by Michael Thiele and the team of Apis Arborea, the sessions will cultivate a deeper connection with the wisdom of wild honeybees, inspiring a reimagining of apiculture practices in harmony with natural ecosystems. Recordings will be available after each individual session. Scholarships are available upon request.
