Honeybee (Re-)Wilding Walk with Apis Arborea

We invite you to join us for a 90-minute guided walk exploring the Garden’s living relationship with free-living honeybees. Led by a knowledgeable guide from the nonprofit Apis Arborea, this walk will highlight the Garden’s TreeNest along with two existing wild bee trees. Along the way, we’ll practice quiet observation—watching flight paths, foraging behavior, and the surrounding habitat to better understand how honeybees interact with the landscape. The Garden’s TreeNest, installed three years ago, is a tree-based biomimicry habitat designed to recreate the conditions of a natural tree hollow, including thick insulated walls, a small elevated entrance, and a protected interior microclimate. Unlike conventional hive boxes, TreeNests support low-intervention, non-extractive stewardship. They are designed to allow honeybees to maintain a self-sustaining life cycle while offering insight into the concepts of “(re-)wilding” and tree-based apiculture. This walk will be led by a member of the Apis Arborea team. Apis Arborea is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the resilience of honeybees through “wilding”—the restoration of natural nesting habitats—and through a holistic, ecological approach to caring for bees.
